LWV Miami-Dade 2025-2026 Priorities

 

The League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County supports and will take action, on current local, state and national policies and issues as stated in our positions.

The following are our 2025-2026 Priorities approved by our membership at the League's Annual Meeting.

  • Protect the voting rights of the voting citizens of Miami-Dade County and their ability to participate in every election.

    Collaborate with fellow LWV chapters around the state to advance the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.

    Continue to advocate and actively support adequate funding for Miami-Dade County Libraries.

    Continue ongoing efforts to make the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners and other elected officials more transparent, open, and responsive to citizens' voices and concerns.

    Support local initiatives to reduce the influence of money in politics.

    Support local rule and efforts to stop preemption by the state government.

    Support the positions adopted by the League of Women Voters USA and the League of Women Voters of Florida.

    Oppose legislation that expands government surveillance of elections, reduces early voting access, and creates barriers to voting by mail.

    Support legislation that expands voting rights, such as The Harry T and Harriette V. Moore Florida Voting Rights Act (HB 1409/SB 1582), which aims to strengthen voter protections.

    Monitor and address changes to ballot initiative campaigns resulting from the passage of HB1205/SB 7016, including shorter timelines for submitting petitions, increased fees, and stricter criminal penalties.

  • Support adequate funding of K-12 and Early Childhood Education.

    Coordinate with LWVFL to safeguard public education in our region and state.

    Monitor the implementation of projects resulting from the League-supported local School Bond.

    Advocate for workable school safety regulations and practices to protect students, faculty, and staff.

  • Support initiatives to eliminate income inequality and recommendations focused on a living wage and pay equality for women.

    Support safe and affordable housing and economic development efforts that assist Miami-Dade County residents and small businesses.

    Monitor discussions around property tax relief and potential reforms, including requiring referendums on eliminating property taxes.

  • Support gun safety measures, including a ban on all semiautomatic assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines, improved background checks, and protection of victims of domestic violence.

    Support local municipalities in their lawsuit regarding the state’s preemption law on gun control.

    Advocate for workable school safety regulations and practices to protect students, faculty, and staff

  • Support the policies and initiatives of our local Divest/Invest Coalition in creating and establishing Participatory Budgeting as an integral component of the County’s budget process.

    Advocate for and support programs and policies that expand access to affordable, high-quality child care for working women and families, while improving the overall quality of life for working women.

    Support policies and initiatives to aid and uplift all marginalized communities, especially as they relate to voter engagement and access.

  • Monitor implementation and activities related to the Miami Forever Bond, EPA Consent Decree with the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department, and Property Assessed Clean Energy throughout the County.

    Support and take action on climate change issues, sea level rise, aquifer protection, solar energy expansion, water resources management, the urban development boundary, and land use and development in the county.

    Advocate for local climate-resilience planning, policy development, and funding to equitably reflect the needs of all residents and support organizations, networks, and emerging initiatives that lead on these issues.

  • Support efforts to protect Miami-Dade’s diverse and multicultural population from repression and intimidation.

    Advocate for policies and practices that ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of immigrants and refugees held in detention centers within our local community, including access to legal aid, medical care, mental health services, and transparent visitation procedures.

    Champion initiatives that empower new and aspiring citizens through comprehensive civic education programs, providing resources and support for naturalization processes, and fostering inclusive community engagement opportunities that promote active participation in democratic life.

    Stand in solidarity with undocumented immigrants by actively working to combat exploitation in various forms, such as wage theft, unsafe working conditions, and human trafficking, while advocating for policies that protect their rights and ensure fair treatment under the law.

    Monitor and address the impact of immigration bills passed during the special session, such as SB 2-C and SB 4-C, which strengthen immigration enforcement.

    Monitor the impact of state and federal immigration legislation on marginalized communities and college students, such as the Tackling and Reforming Unlawful Migration Policy (T.R.U.M.P.) Act and the new Florida State Immigration Enforcement Board.

  • MEMBERSHIP GROWTH & VISIBILITY

    • Cultivate strategic alliances with a diverse range of community-based organizations, advocacy groups, educational institutions, and civic leaders to amplify outreach efforts and broaden the impact of voter engagement and policy advocacy initiatives.

    • Modernize and enhance the organization’s online presence and digital communication channels by implementing a user-friendly website with interactive features, engaging social media content, email newsletters with targeted information, and multimedia resources to effectively communicate chapter news, events, policy updates, and advocacy opportunities to members and the wider community.

    • Explore the use of data analytics to track online engagement and tailor digital strategies for maximum impact in reaching target audiences and promoting online activism.

    • Conduct outreach to underrepresented communities, ensure equitable representation in decision-making processes, and actively seek out diverse perspectives to enrich the

      organization’s work and ensure its relevance and effectiveness in serving the entire community.

    OUTREACH & EDUCATION

    • Enhance public awareness and visibility by implementing a comprehensive communication strategy to educate the public on key LWV issues. This will involve utilizing various platforms, including traditional media (newspapers, radio), digital channels (website, social media, email marketing), and community outreach initiatives.

    • Develop targeted messaging for different demographic groups to ensure effective communication and engagement.

    • Conduct regular public forums, workshops, and presentations featuring League experts to delve deeper into specific issues and encourage informed participation.

    • Collaborate with local organizations and community leaders to amplify the League’s message and increase its presence within the community.

    • Track media coverage and public engagement metrics to assess the effectiveness of awareness campaigns and make necessary adjustments.

    ELECTION & VOTER SERVICES

    • Conduct voter registration drives and get-out-the-vote activities throughout the county in various settings and venues in collaboration with community partners to help optimize reach and effectiveness, particularly among youth and first-time voters.

    • Produce voter guides, host candidate forums, hold “Decode the Ballot” workshops, and engage in other voter engagement activities to inform the electorate on candidates and issues in local elections.

    • Partner with community organizations throughout the county to inform and engage voters in underserved communities and populations, with a special emphasis on youth, returning citizens, and first-time voters.

    • Advocate to increase voters’ access to the polls, including expanding early voting and improving online voter registration.
